About Dr. Oliveira

Dr. Marilia Oliveira, M.D., M.S., D.V.M. is a board-certified Dermatologist and Dermatologic Surgeon. Her warm and kind personality, in addition to excellent listener skills and ability to involve patients in all decisions regarding their skin, make patients feel comfortable with Dr. Oliveira from day one. 

A native of New York City, Dr. Oliveira grew up in Brazil where she obtained a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (D.V.M.). During her work as a Veterinarian, Dr. Oliveira specialized in diseases transmitted from animals to humans and the fascinating interplay between Human and Veterinary Medicine motivated her to pursue further studies in Human Medicine. After earning her M.D. degree from Duke University School of Medicine, Dr. Oliveira trained in General Surgery at Harvard for a year and went on to complete her Dermatology Residency at Duke University.  Dr. Oliveira also earned a Master of Science with focus on Immunology at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and The Skin of Color Society (SOCS).  Her clinical interests include the combination of surgery, laser, and medications for treatment of Hidradenitis Suppurativa, as well as the treatment of other chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as Psoriasis, Atopic Dermatitis, Alopecia Areata, and Vitiligo. She is also interested in Skin Cancer diagnosis and surgical treatment, in addition to issues affecting skin of color.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Oliveira believes in using innovative research and technology to provide optimal care to her patients. Her research interests focus on immunology, clinical trial design, and patient-centered research. She has received numerous research and teaching awards during her career both in the USA and Brazil.  The author of several scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Dermatologic Surgery, International Journal of Women’s Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology, Dermatitis, Clinical and Vaccine Immunology, Dr. Oliveira believes in the use of evidence based-dermatology to bring excellence to patient care.

Dr. Oliveira, who also goes by “Dr. O”, enjoys spending time with her family, horseback riding, outdoor activities, and traveling. Dr. Oliveira is fluent in Portuguese, and Spanish.
